Summary:

Plastic surgery derives its name from Greek plastike meaning “art of modelling” to produce a 3D effect. The history of plastic and reconstructive surgical work dates back from 3000 to 2500 BC. Sir Harold Gillies is considered to be the Father of Modern Plastic Surgery. He developed techniques in treating disfigured facial injuries of soldiers of World War I

Plastic Surgery, a surgical speciality, has many sub specialities like aesthetic surgery, cosmetic surgery, and reconstructive surgery, craniofacial surgery focusing on improving the aesthetic features and functionality of the body parts that are impaired by injury or genetically.

Importance and Scope

The conference highlights the theme “Exploring emerging technologies and scientific advancements in Plastic and aesthetic Surgery”. Market Research:

 Globally the plastic surgery industry is divided into extensive variety of surgical and non-surgical procedures. The surgical procedures are further categorized into sub specialities such as liposuction, Rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, eyelid surgery, Breast augmentation. With betterment of existing technologies and less expensive procedures plastic surgery has been nothing short of miracle. Plastic surgery has become more accessible as the statistics show an increase in the procedures performed year on year. Many procedures have become less invasive with fewer side effects and shorter recovery. With these benefits, it's no wonder that an increasing number of women and men are turning to surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures to improve their appearance. Not only appearance but, plastic surgery is done to reconstruct a malfunctioning body part or to treat people suffering from burn injuries.

ISPAS, International society of aesthetic and plastic surgery, which is also the major regulating body internationally, has released its statistical report on aesthetic and plastic surgery in 2016 that shows a great future is lying ahead for plastic surgery industry.

1. About 21 million surgical and non-surgical procedures were performed in 2015 worldwide which shows an increase of over 1 million cosmetic procedures from 2014.
2. Out of total procedures 9.6 million surgical procedures were performed in 2015
3. 2.6 million Non-surgical procedures were performed in USA out of 12.1 million total non-surgical procedures reported in 2015.
4. United States took the top spot for total number of surgical procedures performed.
5. USA, Brazil, South Korea, India, and Mexico are the top five countries to perform surgical and non-surgical procedures.
6. Botox has been ranked the most popular cosmetic procedures.
7. Most frequently performed surgical procedures were breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, Abdominoplasty. These procedures showed more than 10% increase from previous year.
8. Most frequently performed non-surgical procedures in 2015 were:

9.  Women had 85.6%of the total procedures performed in 2015.Most preferred surgical procedures were Rhinoplasty breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery and Abdominoplasty.
10. More than 3 million procedures were performed on men which accounts 14.4% of the total. The top procedures performed on men were: eye surgery, liposuction, gynecomastia, Rhinoplasty, fat grafting and ear surgery.

According to ASPS, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, around 15.9million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in USA in 2015, which recorded a 2 per cent increase from previous year. Of which 14.2 million minimally invasive procedures and 1.7 cosmetic surgical procedures were performed. Both the procedures registered a 2 per cent increase in 2015. A total of 5.8 million reconstructive procedures were performed which recorded an increase of 1 per cent in 2015 in USA. While plastic surgery industry has a large base in US, it is more prevalent in South Korea. South Korea holds the top position in plastic surgery market by per capita. Taiwan, a leading Asian country is known for its anti-aging procedures such as facelifts, face rejuvenation. Brazil has been experiencing a significant increase in no. of surgeries performed in last few years.

For 2016-2020 the global plastic surgery market is expected to grow at CAGR of 9.47%.

Track3:  Breast surgery
Both Reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries on breast. Small breast may be due to aging or genetic reason. Breast Augmentation surgery increases or restores the breast size using silicone gel implants, Fat grafting, or saline implants. Breasts can be made larger by placing an implant either under the breast tissue or behind the muscle on which the breast lies. Implants are usually inserted through incisions in the fold under the breast. Mammoplasty is an operation which removes the excess fat and skin from the breasts, which are reshaped and the nipples repositioned to form newer smaller breasts.  In Masteopexy, Pleats of surplus skin are removed from underneath the breast, the breast itself is remodelled into a tighter cone and the nipples are repositioned at a higher level so that they lie at the points of the tightened breasts. Gynecomastia is term for male breast enlargement. The procedure removes tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases excess skin.

Surgery to reshape the nose is a very common plastic surgery procedure and it can either increase or decrease the size of nose. The shape of the tip, the bridge and also the nostrils can be changed as can the angle between the nose and the upper lip. Sometimes breathing difficulties can be corrected at the same time. In surgical procedures open and closed Rhinoplasty techniques are used. Various skin flap techniques are used in the surgical procedures such as Bilobed flap, mucosal flap, Septalflap and Paramedian Forehead flap. Track 8: Reconstructive Surgery
The procedures in this surgery type are performed on structural abnormalities of body caused by congenital defects, trauma, infection, developmental abnormalities. It is generally to improve function of the defected part. Facial reconstruction can loosely be defined as surgery following an injury that can rebuild any part of the face ranging from the bones to the various soft tissue Muscle flaps, and most commonly the latissimus dorsi, from the back can be raised through a small incision endoscopically. Microsurgery uses the operating room microscope or high-powered loupe magnification to aid in the techniques of microvascular surgery to reconnect small vessels and nerves. Ulnar and radial artery transections from traumatic injuries are repaired using microvascular techniques.

 Track9: Hand rejuvenation/cherioplasty
If the hand gets impaired in anyway a surgical procedure is the solution. This highly specialized surgery can restore the disfigured structure of hand which is called hand reconstructive surgery. The more common visible signs of aging include darkened spots and precancerous growths. A loss of fatty tissue also occurs, making our hands look bony. Hand rejuvenation treatments can help restore the hands to a more youthful appearance. Various treatment options are available, so one treatment or a combination can be used.

 Track 11: Trauma surgery/burn surgery
Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries. Sharp and blunt trauma can result in disruption of the skin and fat layers in the form of lacerations, deep abrasions, and tears (avulsions).  Deeper soft tissue injuries to the muscles may also occur, as well as injuries to tendons, blood vessels, and nerves. Abrasions are treated with cleansing and topical application of antibiotic ointment or special dressings. Small superficial lacerations may be closed with adhesive paper strips or a skin adhesive.
